John McCrackan letters to his family : and biographical information, 1849-1853.

Letters describe his voyage from New York around the Horn to San Francisco on the ship Balance, with extensive comment on fellow passengers and crew, bird and marine life, stops in Talcahuano and Concepción, Chile; legal practice in San Francisco specializing in land title and water lot cases; property owned; political activities as Whig and Independent; actions of 1851 vigilance committee; civic events; social life and excursions (to the northern California missions, Sacramento, Stockton, and the mines near Quartzburg); and visits to a stock ranch in Sonoma County. Box 1, Apr. 1849 - Sept. 1851; box 2, Oct. 1851 - Dec. 1853. With these also: a volume of typed transcripts of letters, Apr. 1 - Nov. 7, 1849. Biographical information on McCrackan in Box 1.

John McCrackan was born in New Haven, Connecticut ca. 1821-1823. He may have been educated in Rochester, New York. McCrackan arrived in San Francisco aboard the ship "Balance" on November 24, 1849. Settling in that city, he practiced law, owned property (including the "Balance"), and was active in local Whig, then Independent politics. McCrackan was also a member of the Society of California Pioneers. He left San Francisco on January 16, 1854 for Connecticut and possibly a visit to Scotland, and...
